The model and animations are based on the Raccoon as Tanuki literally means "Raccoon dog" in Japanese.

The Tanuki is also a Yōkai (supernatural creature or monster) in Japanese folklore that is able to shapeshift. In Japanese folklore, the tanuki is a popular Yōkai, often depicted as mischievous, shapeshifting, and often carrying a large belly, a straw hat, and a sake jar.

The Tanuki had a hoax about it being able to steal fruits, this was most likely because it resembles a Raccoon and People did not know the full extent of its abilities when it was first released
